Zack Miller discusses investing with Jeff Allen from Mastercard, who provides a glimpse into some of his portfolio companies.

This week’s guest on the Tearsheet podcast is Jeff Allen, who runs Mastercard’s strategic investing function. We talk about his career path and how he ended up being a corporate venture capitalist.

We drill into how Mastercard as an organisation invests in innovation, and how the company works to align incentives with its portfolio companies. Lastly, Jeff gives us an inside look into some of his portfolio companies as part of a broader view on fintech trends.

“I would say the culture is great around innovation and investing,” says Allen. “We’re definitely more than just a payments company. We like to think of ourselves as a technology company within the payments industry. Innovative culture, and the change towards embracing that, and changing what had been a pretty static payments industry for decades, is sort of already happening. It’s really more about the discipline of investing – investing is a different type of animal.”
